Astronaut Reveals Mental Health Struggle After Deluge of Online Abuse Post-Spaceflight
A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also featured well-known figures.
The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” she recounted in a public message, recalling a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the days following the journey.
She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Buried Under Misogyny
Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in women's health research and operated research during the mission, said every professional achievement – from her studies and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her background – was drowned out under the deluge of sexist vitriol.
She is widely recognized for her groundbreaking advocacy protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was deferred after surviving a rape during her university years, leading to a protracted legal battle.
The Fog Begins to Lift
Months following reaching space, she reports that the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she acknowledged the supporters whose messages of encouragement were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she affirmed.
She noted that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had come out of the flight, such as elevated attention for her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.
About the Mission
The self-operating spacecraft lifted off from its launch site in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a brief suborbital flight that exceeded the edge of outer space.
