The golfing superstar celebrates BBC's top sports triumph with double accolades.

Moments before he was crowned, a anxious worry flashed through the golfer's mind. He said he was concerned, "Please don't let it be an F1 driver this time."

"Tonight represents a fantastic night for golf," the champion said. "Our game was honored in such a significant way, with the team winning and then with my award. It's a special evening for golf, and perhaps we can build upon that."

On this occasion, however, there was no dramatic upset. The outcome was uncontested, allowing a overjoyed McIlroy to savor a memorable evening for both himself and the team winners, who were crowned the year's best team.

Non-Stop Adventures

Choosing not to stay for the aftershow party, McIlroy was already thinking about his next sporting adventure. After played in the Golf Channel Games in Florida and flown to the UK, he was heading straight back to Miami.

"It's been a hectic 24 hours," McIlroy explained. "I'm looking forward to a little bit of rest over Christmas."

Hunger for More

However, McIlroy insisted he has no intention to rest on his laurels, notwithstanding completing the set of all four majors earlier in the year. "I still feel I've got a few good years in me," he claimed.

"Additional major championships, tour championships, team competitions, that's great. But if you feel like you can keep getting better and have the desire, that's the essential part."

Team Triumph

Meanwhile, teammate Tommy Fleetwood, who was on stage to accept the collective trophy, also applauded golf's exceptional night and his close friend's award.

"They are the times that will remain with us forever so to get the public's recognition for that is amazing," he stated. "Witnessing it Rory pick that up, I think he has earned it so much."

When reminded that McIlroy was only the third in his sport to win the award in its seven-decade run, Fleetwood chuckled before joking, "Golfers aren't top of the list are we!"

Future Goals

He is aiming to secure his maiden major next year but he acknowledged McIlroy still desires more success. "As long as you want to be the best you can be, and you're still inspired, you'll find things to enhance," Fleetwood explained.

Football Loyalty

Prior to his departure, one final question was raised. Being a massive Manchester United fan, he has been invited to show his trophies at Old Trafford before. So could he be persuaded to do it again after his new triumphs?

"If they halt the flow of multiple scores in Manchester," he answered with a laugh. "There is progress. There's a little bit of hope around."

On the back of a 2025 for the ages, it's understandable that he is looking on the bright side.
