When We Are Witnessing the Downfall of the Cult of Attacking Play, Let’s Savour What It Created.

The Evolution of a Cult is often characterized by specific steps.

1. The Core Concept

A charismatic leader or figureheads present an innovative concept offering a panacea for struggling players.

And so it goes. They’re getting ready to storm the compound in Australia. The gunships are circling. Smoke is rising from the sidelines. One individual, exposed, shivering, the phrase ATTACKING MINDSET written on his body in chicken blood, has come staggering through the lines and is taken aside with discretion towards an inconclusive loan stint in county cricket.

Remember the start, when the world was still young? The era of early Bazball, of pure instinct.

2. The Honeymoon Phase

Movement founders guarantee a reboot, a brighter tomorrow, camaraderie, redemption together with shared faith in the big idea.

What did it represent back then? Players celebrating basking in glory. Ink. Muscles. Focus. Elite male wellness energy. Of course, The team often say it’s not a real term, amusingly because if it doesn’t exist, what was that spectacle?

Yet it’s clear what it is. It’s the player executing a stroke so unconventional it’s beyond belief. It’s the thrill of the leader at his peak, a look that says: focused titan, beard made of wood, natural look, genuinely raw you half-expect to notice and notice he’s fielding on the ground stripped to the waist and cradling a wild salmon.

It’s the opener continuing to have permission to talk in press conferences, appearing as a joyful figure smartly dressed, expressing thoughts like we’re breaking down traditions. And yes, the atmosphere, for a significant period, was only good energy.

3. A New Life

Growth phase. Unity enforced by rote learning of the cult’s slogans. These principles are often illogical as a test of “true belief”.

Does anyone else feel? The criticism, the fury, the disappointment after the first Ashes Test defeat appears excessive, overdone. The performance was poor during the match, as they often do in Australia. They were torn apart in the field during a brief period as plans unraveled, outplayed by Travis Head imitating their style effectively, adaptive to conditions, an athlete shining with aura.

Currently, we see the criticism, the rage, the perception of the team as a failure. The feeling seems to be that defeat must be total, they must be humbled, to be purged, obliterated, destroyed through sheer skill of Mitchell Starc’s movements, the simple basics of the bowler, seen enjoying achievements modestly like he’s just been given a pleasant gift. What will this do to them?

4. Hate Bonding

Issues emerge from failures in the plan. Yet, mistakes are denied. It starts to feed on hostility externally.

In truth, a few days before from the second Test, we are at a critical juncture in the lifespan of this thing. England could quite easily win in Brisbane through aggressive play. Alternatively, they could lose just as quickly. In case of defeat it seems we really might be entering the decline.

Ahead of this, a couple of points to note regarding this. More than two years ago, at the start, of passion and hope, I wrote an article labeling it a movement. People were very angry, which was helpful because everyone knows how to confirm that it’s not a closed group is if supporters respond with anger objecting to the questioning of the philosophy.

Recent events recently are equally notable. Opposition to the style is now the trend. Social media is furious, disappointed commentators, pictures of upset travelling fans cheated out of three days of cricket, like a room full of timeshare owners seeking justice.

On the other hand, exists the larger scene of Australia’s more nuanced ingrained annoyance with the aggressive tourists, out there saying, your cherished traditions and have developed as one way of separating yourself culturally from us, it’s just a joke after all.

Here lies the truth. All movements are similar. The style was a trend as the game has its own culture. Or at least, the sport in England is closed, a circle, a private event, an insular community with centuries of opaque and ritualistic cult history defining it. This has always been where influence is guarded. It’s the British pastime of the British, the original sports washers. And surprisingly, Britain is itself a cult, a structure of hidden ranks, a royal family remains.

The team have been enclosed in this environment since childhood. Attempting to break free, to create a less brutal environment, they are mirroring their past, building another enclosure, an exclusive group, but now with a new team and a coach encouraging individuality if you fit the mold.

Stay present. Run towards the danger. However much you change, you’re always basically in the same place.

Considering this, it might be appropriate to have some sympathy for the approach, to acknowledge its merits, which are significant. How to define it? Encouraging expression. Challenging orthodoxies. Batting aggressively|Attacking with
